If you are looking to buy one, here is what you can expect in terms of their appearance, price, and varieties.

1. Common Colors and "Morphs"

When browsing for an axolotl, you’ll see them categorized by morphs (genetic color variations). Some of the most popular include:

  • Leucistic (Pink/White): The "classic" pet axolotl. They have white or pale pink bodies with dark eyes and bright pink gills.

  • Wild Type: Darker, mottled greenish-brown or black. These look most like axolotls found in nature and often have shiny gold flecks (iridophores) on their skin.

  • Albino: Completely white or golden with pink/red eyes. They lack all dark pigment.
